The UK has been well known as the home of betting, with Harry Ogden of Lancaster widely accepted to have been the first bookmaker after having opened for business on Newmarket Heath in the 1790's. Whilst betting had gone on before then, Ogden was the first person to offer horse racing odds as we are familiar with today.

Progress was slow thereafter, but since the 1960 Betting and Gaming Act and gradual relaxing of restrictions, gambling increasingly became more mainstream and socially acceptable.

Technology Changes Everything!

It was the birth of online betting in the late 1990s that really took gambling in the UK to another level, with the ease of access and the range of markets on offer to bet on being way beyond anything previously available. The addition of mobile betting has since added even greater ease.

Football betting has benefited more than any other sport from these advances in technology and these days there is a vast selection of markets to bet on. Things have certainly come on since William Hill introduced the first fixed odds football coupon in 1944 and it's telling that it wasn't until the early 1990's that football bets no longer had to consist of at least three selections.
